About Lasik

LASIK (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a revolutionary laser procedure that alters the shape of the human cornea allowing light to more accurately focus on the retina. The result is less dependency on glasses and contact lenses. The excimer laser used is a computer controlled ultra-violet beam of “cool” non-thermal light.

LASIK is a very patient friendly procedure. It requires minimal time off work, and there is little to no disruption of lifestyle. LASIK is an elective surgical procedure. At First Eye Care Bedford, information is provided so a thorough understanding of risks and benefits can be weighed prior to making this important decision.

The procedure:

  1. The eye is numbed with eye drops. Then the lids are gently held open to prevent blinking. An instrument called a microkeratome creates a thin flap in the outer cornea.
  2. The laser is used to precisely change the shape of the cornea. This is painless and usually takes less than 30 seconds. The flap is then repositioned and self-adheres within minutes.
